Una Europa Micro-credential in Sustainability

Una Europa Micro-credential in Sustainability

An interdisciplinary online programme for master's students, PhD students, and other curious life-long learners.

CASS closely cooperates with the Una Europa Sustainability Self-Steering Committee, which is working on a few upcoming projects but has also already implemented some ideas. The Micro-credential programme is an up-and-running initiative, designed for graduate or postgraduate students who wish to get an interdisciplinary introduction to sustainability issues. It was co-developed by the University of Helsinki (coordinator: dr Laura Riuttannen), the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (coordinator: dr Maciej Grodzicki), and Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, on the basis of the latest research in Environmental, Sustainability and Atmospheric Sciences, Economics, and Art.

As explained on the Una Europa website, the Micro-credential in Sustainability consists of five MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) which, once completed, award the learner 10 ECTS. After taking the introductory course, there are four additional courses covering the environmental, economic, and social aspects of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Micro-credential programme:

  • gives a holistic understanding of global sustainability challenges and how to address them;
  • critically discusses the dimensions, theories, and concepts of sustainability;
  • responds to the demands of green transition, the rapidly changing labour market and society at large;
  • offers a flexible way to supplement your degree from any discipline with research-based knowledge on sustainable development and skills, applicable within many different sectors of society.

You will learn to analyse sustainability and its importance and influence with an interdisciplinary approach. After taking the Micro-credential programme, you will have a basic understanding of sustainability from ecological, social, and economic perspectives. You will become familiar with indicators that function as measurements of sustainable development, as well as with structures that hinder sustainability transformations. The SDGs are also explored critically in different cultural contexts.

While examining the notions and narratives of sustainability in diverse economic, socio-cultural, technological, political, legal, and scientific situations, you learn to solve sustainability problems. The interdisciplinary and international online environment invites comparisons and teaches about interrelations and complexities necessary for achieving common sustainability goals.
