Rights of Nature were a major theme in discussions of the UN General Assembly and the UN "Harmony with Nature" group (April 23-25, 2023).
The President of the United Nations General Assembly convened an Interactive Dialogue mandated to discuss the possibility of convening and the scope of a high-level meeting, tentatively entitled “Earth Assembly,” to be held on 22 April 2024, so that an evolving nonanthropocentric or Earth-centred paradigm continues to reinforce multilateralism through the discussion of alternative holistic approaches based on diverse world views that may contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and beyond. The Interactive Dialogue was accompanied by working meetings of the "Harmony with Nature" group – a network of practitioners, academics and researchers incorporating Earth-centered approaches in law and policy, with a special focus on Rights of Nature. CASS was represented during these events by Piotr Szwedo, who is also the PI in the thematically relevant project RONSUS. We aim to continue the dialogue and explore further venues for cooperation with UN structures.
